BioI first got an LJ when I discovered the online LOTR fandom a few years back. Unfortunately, knowing no better, I created an LJ with very close to my real name! I switched to a more discreet one for the last few years, but in December 2009 - changed again! I'm focusing more on filk now, so "merryb_esq" became "gottafilk."
I am a long time fan of sci-fi/fantasy, from Star Trek in the 60s to Lord of the Rings today. Love Dr. Who & Torchwood, Firefly, love Babylon 5, love Battlestar Galactica, love LOST, love all of those wonderful alternate worlds filled with characters so rich, they become another family.
And I love to exchange ideas and impressions with others who love the same things! Discovering the online fandom has been a joy, because there were many years of my life that I felt terribly alone with my passion for the crew of the Enterprise or for Tolkien's masterpiece. Being able to connect with others who feel the same has been a gift, and not something taken for granted. So much was sparked by it. I wrote stories and composed songs during the height of the LOTR fandom after years marked by zero creative inspiration, and forged friendships that have endured to this day. I'm just so grateful to be here with all of you. :)
I am now just discovering the larger world of filk, and have taken baby steps towards singing at the real thing at cons and filk circles and such. I so love to hear all this music surrounding "my" worlds, and want to share mine, despite a terrible case of stage fright. I'm working on it, though - one small step at a time.
